Attending the Time Out London Bar Awards 2016

We were so honoured to be invited to the Time Out London Bar Awards, held at the Mondrian Hotel’s Rumpus Room, a gorgeous bar overlooking the City. Time Out London have spent months scouring London for bars they think should be given a little bit extra attention. From the best creative bar to the bartender with the best flair, we were mingling with some of London’s most artistic, talented and popular people. Over two hundred, to be precise.

After getting settled with a delicious Gin Mare and tonic, we settled in and got ready to see who would be crowned top of the top. Well. With hundreds of bars in London, it can’t have been an easy decision to make!

So, if you’re looking for an award-winning bar to drink, have a look at this year’s winners for some inspiration.

Bar of the Year presented by Woodford Reserve
Most Stylish Bar
Punch Room at the London Edition
Is reservations only at this snug manor-house inspired bar. Chosen for it’s ‘classic-but-cool drinks’ Time Out crowned the Punch Room the bar of all bars as well as Most Stylish Bar… this year of course – who will de-crown the champions we wonder? At £14 a pop it’s certainly a London bar!

Best New Bar
Original Sin
If you like to shoot some pool with some cocktails, then it’s easy to see how Stoke Newington’s Original Sin was crowned the best new bar. Sister to Hoxton’s Happiness Forgets, this bar is carving out its own name. Who say’s blood runs thicker than (tonic) water?

Hippest Bar
Satan’s Whiskers
With Original Sin taking best new bar, Satan’s Whiskers keeps up the (almost) blasphemous theme of the awards! Crowned Hippest Bar, it certainly isn’t judged on its dive-like exterior. However, stepping inside it’s typical of the hip crowd, with a daily changing menu of drinks and of course taxidermy lining the walls. Well, hip is related to hipster, after all.

The Best Bartender or Bar Team
Dandelyan (Ryan Chetiyawardana and team)
Judging is hard work, and Ryan, a judge at the awards, nabbed this one. As a judge on the panel, we were a little shocked they were able enter their own institutions. It’s not something we’ve really seen at an awards before – however the Time Out team were clear that judges were unable to vote for their own institution. Dandelyan is located in the Mondrian Hotel we were celebrating in, so also overlooks the City and the Thames.

Matugga Rum presents Most Creative Bar
White Lyan
Another of Alex’s creations, White Lyan won for its creative cocktails. Ryan ’employs no citrus, sugar, fruit or other perishables, and next to no branded products’ and there are only three types of wine. No drinks are ordered off-menu so it’s all homemade spirits and mixers, in some fairly wacky combinations!

Gin Mare presents Classiest Bar

The Connaught Bar
On the lips of every socialite and playboy, the Connaught is an iconic drinking spot. Favourite for its service, low light and ambiance, it’s the place to take a date to wow and awe. Well, where else has its own martini trolley?
