For those of you who know me, you’ll know I’ve grown partial to horse racing. Attending the races has grown phenomenally over the last decade. Gone are the days of hardcore punters studying form and cards for days, and posh toffs marvelling at how splendid it all is. Instead, it’s all about family fun days, charity race days, and even the evening races with live DJ days. Racing is far more inclusive now than it ever has been.
Each course has their big meetings throughout the year – the Cheltenham Festival, the Grand National at Aintree, Royal Ascot and in the case of Newbury, the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day – the highlight of their flat racing season. In fact, some of my winners at Royal Ascot also won at the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day, so it’s not a bad barometer of what you can expect throughout the flat season. Nestled in the heart of Berkshire, Newbury Racecourse has its own station, so getting there from central London couldn’t be easier.
Away from the horses, I’ve always said that racing is just a great day out. It’s a chance to dig out the jewel in your wardrobe and dress up. It’s a chance to enjoy the roar of the crowd as their horse barrels down the final furlong. It’s a chance to have a few drinks with friends (drink responsibly people. Don’t drink too much and fall asleep face first in a burger on the train home). If the weather is set to be fair you can even order yourself a picnic basket, find a perch to watch the action, and bask in the sun (and hopefully the glory). In essence, it’s just a very fun day out, with something for everyone.
Sounds like fun doesn’t it? Me and Laura are heading to the Al Shaqab Lockinge Day on Saturday 14th May, and you could be too. Save £5 off your ticket if you use code FUN16 when you book. Or take your chances and win a pair of tickets!
Win a day at the races!
